AWARENESS OF LIMITS

CONCERNS: Understanding the function of limits; restraint as a support for growth; the freedom that arises from self-restraint.

  1. Here we are confronted with internal or external limitations that necessitate our self-control. To venture forth now would be dangerous; we must wait until we accumulate sufficient energy and resources and until the time is right.
  2. The pressure of events is rising and the time is right for action; holding back the flow now will cause a flood.
  3. When we come to the vital realization that our lack of discipline and restraint has caused us unremitting trouble, rendering us helpless, we can resolve to take charge of our lives and correct this disorder.
  4. Limits that are set in practical harmony with natural cycles and rhythms support our efforts.
  5. The establishment of enlightened self-control gives us positive direction over our lives.
  6. The idealistic, persistent imposition upon ourselves or others of harsh forms of discipline, demanding practices, and overly severe limits, does not support correct development, but may inhibit it.

COMMENT: Regarding limits: recognize them, accept them comfortably and do not necessarily remain bound by them. Physical life is limited in many ways, while the life of the spirit is unlimited. Can we become aware of being simultaneously the limited and the Unlimited? And which aspects of ourselves will we cultivate in this limited life, the Limited or the Unlimited?
