THE DYNAMICS OF STRONG FORCES
CONCERNS: Proper conduct with others, social awareness, restraining emotional outbursts, preventing trouble by thoughtful behavior; acting with dignity and decorum, maintaining a clear mind In the midst of the world’s seductions.
- A simple, modest, self-contained mode of conduct brings us safety; self-serving ambition provokes challenges.
- When we are not influenced by worldly claims, we can pass freely on our way; become settled within.
- Those with narrow vision, who cannot see the whole picture, endanger themselves by reckless, headstrong behavior.
- Proceeding cautiously, quietly confident, fully aware of the risks, we can successfully complete a difficult mission.
- Determined action based on true self-awareness, while not without risk, is correct and will lead to success. Inspect yourself well and become relentlessly observant.
- By examining the effects of our actions, we can determine whether our motivations are correct. Achieving such an objective attitude is a concrete indication of real development.
COMMENT: Here we are to distinguish the subtle from the material and causes from effects. The strong forces of everyday life are the emotions and prejudices of the subjective world and the illusions and attractions of the external world. When we can see these fairly clearly and practice distancing ourselves from their constant influence, we develop an inner poise and stability that can take us safely through a shifting world. When we begin to pay more attention to causes than to effects we will consider carefully the impact and implications of our proposed actions and so take great care to be responsible with what we initiate. Experiencing the painful consequences of our selfish and impulsive actions is the education leading to this realization.
