COMMANDING A TASK FORCE

CONCERNS: The power of goal-oriented groups following a proper direction set by a firm, virtuous, and responsible leader.

1. If we do not set out correctly, with just motivation and consciousness, we may be defeated even if we “win.” Be aware of selfishness and a lack of discipline.
2. To be given power is to be recognized as being both obedient and authoritative; all our real power is delegated to us and its continuance depends on our ability to utilize it correctly in the service of others.
3. A scattered leadership guarantees defeat. If we regain focus, we may not achieve our goal, but we will not suffer defeat.
4. A strategic withdrawal is not a defeat; someone who knows how to advance but not how to retreat is not yet a developed leader.  Be aware of stubbornness and pride.
5. When we must confront a threat, all our energies and resources should be unified; inner conflict would weaken our response. If we need help, we must find others who are competent and trust them.
6. When a conflict is over or a task completed we need to proceed constructively; do not be attached to material gains; maintain an elevated perspective; apportion rewards with discrimination in the flush of victory; relinquish grudges and resentments.

COMMENT: We are complex entities composed of many diverse elements. Great self-knowledge is acquired when we become aware of them; learn to understand their dynamics and assume the constructive leadership necessary to harmonize this multiplicity.
